CONCEPT
The concept of SANKOFA is derived from the custom of Asante of the Akan People of West Africa.
In the Asante language, SANKOFA is rendered in the vernacular as “se wo were firi na wosan kofa a, yenkyi.” Literally translated it means “It is no taboo to go back for what has been ignored or forgotten”. Conceptually, it teaches that it is the wise that never forgets the past. The visual representation of the concept is a bird bending backwards as it moves forward, thus SANKOFA seeks to blend the past with the future in a harmonious and salubrious relationship.
In the context of Sankofa International, female education in most parts of Africa appears to have been ignored for far too long and the time has come for us to liberate it from its entanglements and bring it into focus just as it is done for male education. Perhaps, if female education were given equal push as that of males, the situation we find ourselves today as a people might be better.
For the accomplishment of this task, it is expected that individuals and civil societies would spearhead the crusade and, this time, not only by advocacy but by sterling examples. This is where Sankofa International gets whipped into its mandate.
